283 has been in service for over a hundred years the company was opened November 27th 1913. We cover the Brownsville section of Brooklyn but respond into east Flatbush, crown heights and canarsie sections of Brooklyn. The company since its formation has always been one of the busiest in the city and one time the company had a second section and due to the rising number of fires and runs a squad company was formed in and was housed with 283 until it was disbanded in 1976.
Staffing
The members in the firehouse are still one of the busiest companies in the city for fire duty and the company has a lot of pride and tradition. The company was originally organized at 214 Bristol street and was moved into a new quarters on howard ave in 1973 with squad 4. Right now we occupy the firehouse and share it with deputy chiefs of the 15th division.
