Legacy forged at Port Chester, NY — Every detail tells a story of service
Harry Howard Hook & Ladder Co. 1 was organized October 13, 1858. Founded by firefighting pioneer Harry Howard, who was one of the last Volunteer Fire Chiefs of the Fire Department of New York. He was the first to create the bunk-in system for volunteers to sleep in the firehouse and respond to calls quicker. Eventually he relocated north to Westchester County and realized that Port Chester did not have a Ladder Company, so he established Harry Howard Hook & Ladder Co. #1 in 1858. Harry Howard was such an influential person in the fire service that they have named the FASNY Firemen's Home in Hudson, New York after him.

The Ladder Company consists of 2 Aerial Devices: Tower Ladder 2 (a 2019 Seagrave 95' Aerialscope) and Ladder 31 (a 2007 100' Spartan/Smeal Rearmount). They are quartered with one of the four Engine Companies and the only Rescue Company. Together they are affectionately known as 'Da Big House'.
The most notable fire in Port Chester history is the Gulliver's Night Club Fire on June 30, 1974, on the border of Port Chester, NY and Greenwich, CT. The fire killed 24 people, injured 19 people and 13 firemen. It was caused by arson in an adjacent bowling alley aimed at covering up a minor burglary. Members are trained in Elevator rescue, Swift and Ice water rescue, FAST (Firefighter Assist and Search Team), confined space and trench rescue, High and Low Angle Rope Rescue.
