Legacy forged at New Haven, CT — Every detail tells a story of service
The firehouse has been in operation since the 1960s. Originally home to Engine 8 and Truck 6, it also housed a Battalion Chief at one point. Engine 8 previously operated out of Edward Street, and when Engine 14 on Highland Ave was closed, the current firehouse on Whitney Ave was built. This house has played a major role in special operations. Prior to Rescue 1 being established in 2018, the city operated Squad 1 (Whitney Ave) and Squad 2 (Ellsworth Ave), which were later combined. Before the squad system, Engine 8 ('Super 8') responded to all technical rescues citywide.

The house runs Engine 8, Rescue 1, HazMat 1, a utility vehicle, and the trench rescue trailer. Rescue 1 is a citywide resource and also cross-staffs HazMat 1, which serves the city and region.
Engine 8 runs approximately 2,800 calls per year and Rescue 1 runs approximately 1,000 calls per year. Members are trained in structural firefighting and specialized disciplines including rope rescue, trench rescue, hazmat technician, confined space rescue, vehicle extrication, water rescue, elevator rescue, and machinery rescue.
Every month we elevate a firehouse whose story deserves the spotlight. Members receive museum-grade coins and patches backed by the crews who live the job — authentic collectibles with real brotherhood behind them.
