Founded on June 3, 1976, by five determined individuals who personally financed the department's first fire engine, the Philadelphia Volunteer Fire Department was built from the ground up to meet the fire protection needs of a growing rural community. What began with a single truck and a shared vision has grown into a trusted and capable emergency response organization. The construction of its first fire station in 1978, the addition of specialized apparatus, and the creation of the Philadelphia Fire Subordinate Service District — the first in Craighead County — marked major milestones in strengthening local fire protection. Now 50 Years Strong, the department has proudly served the citizens of Craighead and Greene Counties through volunteer service and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Staffing
Staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers who serve with professionalism, courage, and integrity. The house runs a proud fleet — including Engine 140, Tanker 142, the beloved 'Green Hornet' of District No. 1, Engine 146, and Utility 147 — always ready to answer the call whenever it comes.
Call Volume
An ongoing focus on training, readiness, and infrastructure has steadily improved fire insurance ratings, helping reduce insurance costs for residents and businesses. Today, both the Philadelphia Fire District and the Lorado Fire Protection District proudly maintain an ISO Class 5 rating — a collaboration proven effective for more than 30 years and a vital part of regional fire protection.
